My approach to tutoring is derived from tried and tested classroom methods.

Engaging

Students learn Maths best when it is made real and when they enjoy it. Abstract concepts like probability and algebra can be brought to life by hands-on, practical, engaging methods.

To aid students’ understanding, I use a range of physical and virtual manipulatives such as geoboards, algebra tiles, multilink, and polydrons.

Enabling Consolidation

Lots of pupils need to revisit topics several times in order to consolidate their understanding, and then again when revising for exams! I record short explanations and solutions in five minute videos enabling consolidation and revision beyond lesson time. Your child - and you! - will have access to these in a shared Google Drive.

Explanation

I’ve taught Maths to over a thousand children and teenagers; they all learn in different ways. My years of experience in the classroom enable me to give clear, logical explanations that the pupil in front of me will understand.

The ‘penny-dropping’ moment is crucial for a pupil’s confidence and enables them to succeed in Maths. My aim is to ensure this happens every lesson.

Curriculum Knowledge

I have thorough, up-to-date knowledge of the Department for Education’s programmes of study for Mathematics and on a range of Exam board specifications. Many pupils just don’t know how to apply their knowledge to examination or multi-topic questions. I can put that right!

Continual Assessment for Learning

Aligned with pedagogical best practice, my teaching is based on continual assessment for learning, enabling me to unpick key misconceptions and to move learning forward. Under my tuition, pupils will build upon their prior knowledge and strengthen their understanding, enabling them to tackle difficult concepts with confidence.
